Steiner The Great

New owner, Cheryl, writes:

In September of 2002, I saw Steiner the Great's photo on the CANTER web site. I talked with Cathy Barbeau and Frank Randazzo, his trainers, about the horse and made arrangements to see Steiner on the 13th of September at Fairmount Park.

You might say that Steiner and I choose each other -- it was more like love at first sight, and I was glad that I had brought a trailer along just in case. Steiner's last race was Tuesday and he was home at my farm that Saturday. My husband and I purchased him and a stablemate Somebody Special that weekend.

Steiner was my guy from the moment that I met him and the bond has continued to grow. I started his training from the beginning and taught him his new job. He was easy to train, a gentleman on the ground and in the saddle. I remembered to do one part of his training that I knew he lacked, getting him accustomed to the uneven footing of the real world. I worked him on all kinds of surfaces and took him out on the trails. Dressage and flat work have been our primary focus. It has been necessary to work with him and develop his balance and strengthen his back. He will begin his over fences schooling this fall, and should be ready to begin eventing with the spring season.

Steiner loves to jump, and he has a fantastic work ethic. He has been great to ride with other horses, even during cross county schooling, he only did what he was asked to. He is not spooky. I know that he has a tremendous galloping stride, yet he has never even hinted that he would do more than what I asked him to do. To ride his gallop is to ride the crest of a wave into the wind. He is that smooth. His dressage scores have steadily improved, and at his second schooling show he earned his first blue ribbon.

I knew that he was very special, and when I checked his pedigree, I found that he is a great grandson of War Admiral. He also has most of the sought after bloodlines for event horses. He has courage, and is very brave, and sane.

I cannot thank the volunteers at CANTER enough for providing the means for me and this great horse to come together. Thank you all.

P.S. I also found that a half brother of Steiner was also purchased through a CANTER site in a different state. That is really cool!
