Allie Conrad - Executive Director
Allie Conrad is the Executive Director of CANTER Mid Atlantic which she began in 1999 at Charles Town Racetrack. Allie became involved in CANTER after purchasing a horse out of the infamous New Holland Auction in Pennsylvania. The horse she bought (pictured above) would change her life. A hard-knocking racehorse with 60 + starts at Charles Town, he showed her the importance of advocating for racehorses. Allie and Phinny’s story was told in the 2009 book “Second Chance Horses” and details their relationship.
In 2008 Allie had a chance to tell the stories of racehorses on the world stage when she was invited to testify in front of a congressional hearing, which has spring-boarded Racehorse Welfare to the forefront of animal welfare issues.
Allie, a lifetime resident of Maryland, now resides on her farm in Southern Pines, North Carolina with her fiancé John, Jack Russell Terrier Bertie Boots and DB Cooper, Dexter the cat, and 6 horses, including the illimitable Phinny.
In addition to running the CANTER Mid Atlantic group and overseeing the operations at 7 racetracks, in her spare time, enjoys Photography, Eventing and riding her horses.

Jessica brings a world of knowledge to CANTER Mid Atlantic's training and track listing program in Delaware thanks to her many years riding, retraining and finding homes for horses off the track as a young girl. Jess heads up our Delaware Park track listing program as well as retrains and places 30+ horses a year for the CMA program. Jess's popular blog, http://dixierumble.wordpress.com has paved the way for many people to forge better relationships with their horses thanks to her honest, open and straightforward advice on training.
Jess lives in Camden, Delaware with her very helpful husband Kurt, many cats, and their own horses. In addition to spending a load of time riding at her farm, she and Kurt enjoy going on Paper Chases and foxhunts.
Suzanne is our top retrainer down here in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Stay tuned for additional bio!
Lauren helps head up our Delaware Park program, Real life wise, Lauren Gassaway works in finance, likes math, and loves to travel. Horse wise, Lauren has been around and loved horses since she was eight, and has been with CANTER at Delaware Park since 2008. Before joining CANTER (and finance), Lauren worked as a racehorse groom full time and still shares her time at the racetrack between working for her long time racetrack boss and volunteering for CANTER. Lauren enjoys channeling her experience at the track into the goodness that CANTER does. The racetrack is full of interesting and talented personalities, many of which love their horses, and CANTER helps every personality market their horse to a new home after racing in hopes for the best. Her favorite horse is a stakes horse she used to groom, Tartlet, the meanest, craziest, yet best horse she has ever met.
Mary is our Charles Town track lead, and keeps our trainers well informed as well as makes a majority of our track visits. More info coming soon!
Amy is our Maryland racetrack lead, covering Laurel, Pimlico and Bowie racetracks.
I was inspired to volunteer for CANTER Mid-Atlantic after finding the equine love of my life on the CANTER listings 8 years ago, an OTTB named Silent Thunder. Thunder now competes as a Hunter, he was the 2010 Maryland Horse Show Association champion in the Preliminary Adult Hunters and has made multiple appearances at the Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Shows in Lexington, VA. (Thunder was a part of the CANTER piece during the 2012 Breeders Cup coverage as the horse shown jumping over fences.) I also added another CANTER listing to the family this past year - National Standard, who at this point has made it to a couple of shows to do the Baby Green Hunter divisions.
I started out as a volunteer at Charles Town, but have now been the primary CANTER contact for Laurel for over 4 years, with an occasional visit to Bowie. My baseball cap and ponytail are a familiar sight on Laurel's backstretch. :)
I am a volunteer for CANTER Mid Atlantic at Mountaineer Racetrack. I've been doing listings for the last 8yrs. My family and I run a small racing stable in Ohio and PA and I enjoy playing around with my horse "For Pete's Sake" at Mini Trials and Hunter Paces in my spare time.
