Horse Wanted Form
- You must be at least 18 years of age to have your name on the Horse Wanted List.
- Information is circulated at the track but is not collected on website for any other purpose besides serving as contact information for the Horse Wanted service for CANTER of Michigan.
- Besides looking on the Horse Listings section of CANTER, the Horse Wanted List is another way a prospective buyer can find retiring racehorses that are available in Michigan. The list is actively maintained and circulated at least once a week. If a racehorse trainer thinks he has a horse that might match what you are interested in, he/she will give you a call to set up an appointment to view the horse.
A reminder: These are racehorses straight off the track and have had no retraining! Although they are broke to ride and generally load well, have excellent ground manners and many life experiences for young horses, they usually do not understand leg yields, steering or "Whoa"! They need experienced riders and often professional re-training. Please refer to the Ex-Racehorse Resources and CANTER's Frequently Asked Questions for more details.
Fill out the following form COMPLETELY - Remember, the more information you provide, the easier it will be for trainers to match you with a horse. Be reasonable in your requests. As a general rule, the price of the horse is determined by three factors: soundness, height and the trainer's need to transition the horse off the track. You are not likely to find a 16.2 hand horse that will vet out for jumping for $800 although this is not impossible. The highest numbers of horses are listed in the $1500 to $2500 range. If you live outside of Michigan, you must be ready and able to provide transportation for the horse from Michigan to your state at your expense.
MOST TRAINERS DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO EMAIL. PLEASE PROVIDE AN ACCURATE PHONE NUMBER WHERE YOU CAN BE REACHED. For any questions relating to this process please Email cantermichigan@canterusa.org
Please note: A person seriously looking to transition a racehorse to a new life should aggressively monitor our Horse Listings and not rely on trainers to call them. To keep the list current, your horses wanted listing will expire after a period of one month. You must return to this form and re-enter your information to continue your request.
