Welcome to CANTER Texas!

CANTER Texas is a 501c3 volunteer run non-profit organization dedicated to helping retired racehorses have brighter futures after the finish line.

We provide free advertising in our Trainer Listings section for horses who are recently retired or currently racing and looking for new careers. Interested buyers should contact the owner/trainer in individual ads to answer any questions or arrange purchase. CANTER is not involved in the transaction and takes no fee or commission. If you are a racehorse owner or trainer and would like to list a horse on CANTER, please contact us!

We also have a Rehabilitation & Adoption Program, in which we assist racehorses with injuries that need treatment and recovery time. We provide them with veterinary care and place them with fosters until they are ready for new homes. If you are interested in becoming a foster or adopting a CANTER owned horse, please contact us to fill out an application. If you are an owner/trainer with a racehorse in need of assistance, please contact us. Unfortunately due to limited funds and fosters, we cannot accept all horses into our Rehabilitation Program, but we will make every effort possible.

There are many ways you can help!

*Donate money, items or services to support our horses! You can PayPal to our email, or mail checks and items to our physical address.

*Volunteer your time or skills, or network by joining our Facebook group "CANTER Texas Volunteers".

*Foster a racehorse in need of a short or long term home.

From Kill Pen to Kentucky

We are very excited to have TWO horses that will be representing CANTER TX at the Retired Racehorse Training Project Makeover!

In this event, competitors have 9 months to re-train a Thoroughbred racehorse in one or more disciplines and will compete at the finale in October at the Kentucky Horse Park. Read more about it at

Although not specifically part of the CANTER program, our volunteer group works to help find homes for abused and slaughter bound Thoroughbreds and these two horses were saved by that effort.

Turner1 WINNING ADVANCE (aka Turner) is a 4 year old gelding. His racing owner/trainer sold him to what they thought was a good home but he got bounced around and ended up at auction a few months later, purchased by a kill buyer and headed for slaughter. He was saved by CANTER TX director Laura Holmes, who at the time couldn't keep him, but he found his way back to her and the two of them will be competing together in the Makeover.

moneycover SWEET VISTA (aka Money) is a 5 year old gelding. He too was sold to a good home after his racing career but a year later, wound up at the very same auction just a couple weeks after Winning Advance. He was in bad condition with a severely injured, infected hind leg and could hardly walk. CANTER TX outbid the kill buyer for him this time without knowing if he could even be saved. Erin Givens and Johnny McDowell of Sterling Hunters & Jumpers ( stepped in to help, providing Money with a great home and the veterinary treatment he needed. He recovered amazingly quick under their care and will be competing with Erin at the Makeover.

First Touch became a CANTER Texas owned horse and has recently been adopted into a wonderful home where she will continue her extensive rehabilitation. She is an incredible mare who has shown she has the true heart of a Thoroughbred and a strong will to survive. CANTER Texas Graduate Rocks the Ultimate X Showdown!

When Decotah Jackson saw the handsome grey MIKE'S STORM on the CANTER Texas Trainer Listings page, it was love at first sight. Decotah was searching for a horse to compete in the Ultimate X Showdown, a challenge in which trainers have 100 days to take a fresh off the track Thoroughbred racehorse and compete in a combined barrel racing and freestyle exhibition.

MIKE'S STORM was re-named "Legacy" and after 100 days together, they headed from Texas to Ohio where they finished a fantastic 6th out of 15 trainers overall! Congratulations to Decotah and Legacy from all of us at CANTER Texas! We look forward to seeing them turnin and burning their way around barrel racing competitions here in Texas and showing off how ex racehorses excel in their post track careers!
