Tingun, 5 year old liver chestnut gelding

We have a weak spot for liver chestnuts and this guy does not disappoint.  Tingun is a solid handsome man, standing 16.1 hands.  He's built like a warmblood and is a lovely mover.   Read more

January 2014: Maple Avenue has arrived in Virginia!

After a very successful rehab from eye removal surgery, Maple Avenue has arrived at his new temporary home,  a  Dressage training facility in Virginia.  Thank you all for your donations, Maple owes his life to you.  He's very happy and healthy and he can't wait to get to work.  We will let you know when he is available for adoption to an approved home!

Maple Avenue Front Med CU Oct

Friday November 8, 2013:

Maple Avenue, the first and only Canter IL-owned thoroughbred, was rushed to Michigan State University by Canter volunteer Philippa Humphries. Maple has a badly infected eye which was not responding to treatment as hoped.  All efforts to save his eye are being explored by the vets at MSU and we are so grateful for their aroud-the-clock help.

Maple is a stunning 6yo chestnut gelding with impecabble breeding, wonderful manners, an awe-inspiring trot and a heart of gold.  We are doing everything we can to save his eye and we need your help.  Please donate now to help us.  His veterinary bills will be substantial, your help is needed.

CANTER Illinois is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing retiring racehorses with opportunities for new careers after the finish line.  We have successfully transitioned over 500 horses from Fairmount Park, Arlington Park and Hawthorne!  Currently, we operate primarily out of Fairmount Park (St. Louis, MO area) but also have and need volunteers to help in Chicago at Arlington and Hawthorne.

If you are a trainer and would like us to list a horse for you, please contact Jodi Ladner or Aletta (Ah-let-ah) Martin.

Executive Directors, Canter IL

When the race is over" on CNN 5-3-2013

"CANTER, a member of the coalition, was one of the first groups to create an online showcase of ex-racehorses in 1997. It's an all-volunteer organization with affiliates across the country, where people scour the "backsides" of racetracks every weekend and document the horses up for sale, executive director Nancy Koch said.

"The racetrack is quite a closed-in world. Not everyone can wander into the backside, you need to be escorted otherwise. We broke a lot of barriers that way," Koch said.

Other CANTER affiliates in "phase two" have taken in horses and provided rehabilitation so they can find new homes. They placed more than a thousand horses in 2012, according to the Homes for Horses Coalition."

CANTER Horse Blogs - come follow along!

CANTER Mid Atlantic blogs have been a smashing success as indicated by our thousands of visitors.  In an effort to chronicle the ups and downs of Thoroughbred Retraining, we have several people who have volunteered to write about their day-to-day experience with individual horses. This has proven to provide a wonderful learning opportunity for the Thoroughbred-buying public, as well as being an amazing opportunity for our horses. Our goal to bring each horse from the racetrack to recognized competition has been going swimmingly, and we love the support along the way. If you haven't read the blogs, we hope you will, and join in on the journey.
