Welcome to CANTER

CANTER stands for The Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses. CANTER started as a solution to help racehorses find new careers by connecting buyers and sellers through posting racehorses for sale on the Internet. The program quickly became a national web-based phenomenon.  Since the first CANTER Michigan program started in 1997, it and has grown to include affiliates in Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Mid Atlantic, New England, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington. All the CANTER programs are all-volunteer organizations with 501c3 non profit status.

The affiliates in Arizona, California, Kentucky, Michigan, Mid Atlantic, New England, Ohio, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Texas, and Washington have also expanded their CANTER programs to include owner relinquished horse adoption programs, where CANTER assumes ownership of the horse and all associated expenses.  Many of these CANTER Phase II programs have affiliations with veterinary colleges such as Michigan State University and Ohio State University, where horses receive necessary surgical procedures to return to soundness.

CANTER Colorado verified by GFAS

CANTER Colorado is the first CANTER USA affiliate to be Verified by Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

GlobalFederation-200w(Centennial, CO) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Verified status to CANTER Colorado as of December 1, 2014.

Verification means that CANTER Colorado meets the criteria of a true equine sanctuary/rescue and is providing humane and responsible care of the animals. To be awarded Verified status, an organization must meet GFAS's rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards which are confirmed by a site visit and they must also adhere to a demanding set of ethical and operational principles. The verification status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors and grantors to recognize CANTER Colorado as an exceptional organization.

“CANTER stands for Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses,” said Daryl Tropea, GFAS Senior Deputy Director. “The first CANTER program was established in Michigan and affiliates are located across the country including; Arizona, California, Illinois, Kentucky, Mid Atlantic, New England, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington and Colorado. We are very proud to announce that CANTER Colorado is the first affiliate to meet all of GFAS standards of excellence. Achieving this certification is not easy but CANTER Colorado was committed to modifying their policies and procedures ensuring that they provided the best possible care.”

“CANTER Colorado is proud to be recognized and verified as an organization of excellence for our Thoroughbred Aftercare Program through the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries,” said Jamie Girouard, Executive Director of CANTER Colorado. “We are dedicated to the care and retraining of each horse that enters our program. We place our horses in high quality, non racing homes that embody our non-breeding policies and will carry out our level of care and beyond. We hope our Verification through GFAS will be an example for other programs like ours to practice these high quality standards in a collected effort to help retiring racehorses.”

“It is a victory for rescued animals to reduce the number that will need new homes moving forward,” states Kellie Heckman, GFAS Executive Director. “GFAS certified organizations are committed to tackling this problem, and every new verification is a step forward.”

The GFAS Equine Accreditation Program is made possible by a generous grant from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®.

About Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the sole purpose of strengthening and supporting the work of animal sanctuaries, rescues, and rehabilitation centers worldwide. The goal of GFAS in working with and assisting these animal care facilities is to ensure they are supported, honored, recognized and rewarded for meeting important criteria in providing care to the animals in residence. GFAS was founded in 2007 by animal protection leaders from a number of different organizations in response to virtually unchecked and often hidden exploitation of animals for human entertainment and financial profit. The GFAS Board of Directors guides the organization’s work in a collaborative manner. While the board includes those in top leadership at Born Free USA, The Humane Society of the United States, International Fund for Animal Welfare, the ASPCA, and American Anti-Vivisection Society, all board members serve as individuals dedicated to animal sanctuaries. www.sanctuaryfederation.org.

About CANTER Colorado

CANTER Colorado is an all volunteer organization that helps retiring race horses find new starts after their racing career ends. In partnership with the local racetrack, Arapahoe Park, CANTER Colorado works with the horsemen and women at the track every week during the racing season, taking listings of horses from trainers on the backside in an effort to advertise available horses with prospective buyers.  In addition to the listing service, CANTER Colorado launched an aftercare program, offering race owners the opportunity to donate horses directly to the organization. CANTER then works with a team of volunteers and equine and veterinary professionals to rehabilitate and retrain these horses before placing them in long-term, non-racing homes. For more information, visit www.canterusa.org/colorado or call 773-550-9866.
