PLEASE NOTE: Due to our desire to monitor adoptive placements, we do not generally adopt our horses to homes outside the New England/New York area. (Exceptions may be made based on circumstances, but these are not the norm!)

If you are interested in adopting and live outside our area, please consider applying to adopt through another CANTER affiliate that is closer to you.

Due to the number of horses needing our help on an ongoing basis, we cannot "hold" horses for prospective adopters; the first approved adopter who is deemed a suitable match for a particular horse, and completes the adoption process, has the option to adopt that horse.
Please read the guidelines for more information.

Summer 2008:
In addition to the available horses on this page, we have several other horses in care who are not yet ready to go up for adoption, as they recover from injuries and are evaluated to determine their best possible future careers.

Senior Coco...who fractured an ankle at the track and was saved thanks to the generosity of two Good Samaritans, his wonderful foster mom, and outstanding vet care...is one such horse:

Senior Coco at the track, winter 2007 (left); and at his foster home in spring 2008

Though our "transitioning" horses are not quite at the point of looking for new homes, they are in need of caring sponsors to support their rehabilitation and daily needs. Please contact us to learn more about becoming a sponsor.

We will be profiling our very special sponsorship horses on our web site in the  near future...stay tuned!

AVAILABLE ADOPTIVE HORSES
 UPDATED 6/24/2008

A BIG, Impressive, Sound and Showy Mare!

C07-2234-05. TRAINER-OWNED MARE, Solid chestnut, 16.1 hands, 12 years old

"All Net Joe" has a boy's name - but she's all girl! This horse is a fantastic find for the TB-knowledgeable rider looking for an intelligent and graceful mount. She is gorgeous, with a lovely dished face, elegant head, and muscular, powerful build.

"Netty" has been a broodmare for the past few years and has a star-studded pedigree (she was also a standout racehorse herself!) Please note that while she may be bred for sporthorse purposes, under the terms of CANTER's adoption agreement, Netty cannot be bred for racing.

She would also make a very flashy riding/show horse (she has some knee enlargement from her racing days, and is not suitable for high-level jumping or eventing). And she is at the perfect age to start retraining: mature and unflappable, with many years of showing still ahead of her.

Netty is green under saddle, but she is sound and in excellent shape, a great mover with lots of scope and a superb brain. Her longtime handler says she will make a phenomenal retraining project! No vices, loves attention - an all-around classy mare.

NEW PHOTOS - SPRING 2008!----->

Netty's adoption fee is $500. Approved adopters can see her at her foster home in New Hampshire.

An Incredible Mare with an Incredible Story

C07-2418-05. CANTER-OWNED MARE, Chestnut, 16.2 hands, 20 years old

If you have already heard the incredible story of "Patience"...you know what a one-in-a-million mare this beautiful, courageous girl is. If you have not yet read about her journey and inspiring display of an unflagging will to live, please click here to learn more.

Seven months after her chances of survival appeared grim, Patience looks and feels great! Her wounds have healed, her attitude is excellent, and though her back is swayed and she can need a little extra time to shake off the stiffness first thing in the morning (like many of us in the winter!)...she clearly believes she is 2, not 20!

Patience has spent her entire life as a racehorse and then a broodmare; she is green under saddle, but lives up to her name, and is willing to learn a new job as a walk/trot pleasure horse. She would be a beloved family horse for occasional light riding on the flat, or a noble and majestic companion to graze your pastures in her golden years. She is a natural as a babysitter!

After everything she's endured, Patience has more than earned a loving, appreciative, gentle home. If that home is yours...please get in touch...she'd love to meet you!

Patience's adoption fee is $250 to a very special home! Approved adopters can see her at her foster home in Vermont.

A Versatile, Talented Mare Who Really Has It All!

C07-2239-05. CANTER-OWNED MARE, Bright bay, 15.3 hands (with a wide-bodied build), 18 years old

"Southern Luck" - aka "Luckie" - is a quality mare in every way: she's gorgeous, with a classic, Warmblood-type build; gentle and exceptionally well-mannered; and a fluid, pretty mover! You would think upon meeting her that this beauty is 8 - not 18!

Though she has spent the past several years as a broodmare, Luckie has really found her niche as a riding horse. She should make an outstanding dressage, pleasure or trail horse under saddle.

This mare is SO special that her foster mom's young daughter hopped on her within days of Luckie arriving from her old home at the breeding farm; Luckie took to it in stride! Today, she easily walks/trots/canters in both directions - both in the arena AND out on the trails!

Luckie has many years ahead of her as a trusty dressage and/or pleasure horse (she is very sound and feels great, but not suitable for open jumping, eventing, or similarly strenuous disciplines). She would love to be someone's devoted buddy for lower-level shows, as well as for jaunts on the trails and the beach!

Luckie was pinfired (a common track procedure designed to prevent bucked shins) as a youngster in racing training, but that is cosmetic only. She loves other horses, has no vices, and is pure class, all around.

Among several other trips to hunter paces and local shows, Luckie was ridden by her foster mom's 14-year-old daughter in our CANTER Benefit Hunter Pace! She not only looked great...she was PERFECT in every respect.

MORE LUCKIE PICS:

Luckie's adoption fee is $500. Approved adopters can see her at her foster home in the Boston Metrowest area.

A Perfect Gentleman, Primed for a Career Change!

C07-2417-11. CANTER-OWNED GELDING, Bay, 16 hands with a BIG build, 7 years old

Levelheaded, dependable, hardworking, and honest...all terms that describe the handsome, immensely likeable "Mumbles" ! Despite his funny name, this barrel-chested gelding is very dignified and debonair. His enviable work ethic helped him earn more than $100,000 on the track, and he did it all the hard way, giving his best each time! Mumbles' trainer decided to donate him to us at the end of the Suffolk Downs meet, recognizing that the good ol'boy was slowing down and wanting to ensure him a good retirement while he was healthy and able to pick up a new job.

Mumbles demonstrated perfect manners the day we met him at the track, and he has continued to exhibit a sense of etiquette that would make Emily Post proud. (He does crib and will need to wear a Miracle Collar in his stall, but he is very cooperative). He has some moderate enlargement in both front ankles, but has not had any soundness issues since coming into foster care.

Mumbles is green under saddle, but shows all the signs of being a great student. He will make a super flatwork, trail, and pleasure horse - he could even pick up Western pleasure without breaking a sweat!

NEW report from Mumbles' foster mom about his recent interaction with a 10-year-old girl at the barn - doesn't this melt your heart?!:

"She held the brush up for him to smell and proceeded to begin grooming. His neck stretched to the ground - totally relaxed and loving the whole thing. She's a peanut so couldn't reach his back so she is jumping up with each stroke. He wrapped his head and neck right around her and nuzzled to her opposite side making a nice little pocket for her as she continued to leap into each brush stroke. He left his head low so she could reach and the two fell in love. She was in there for a good hour. When she emerged - all I could see was these bright blue eyes with a huge smile through the dirt on her face. All the mud on his back had fallen onto her face. He looked at her as if to say - now - doesn't that feel great!!! She was so happy and he was loving every minute of the attention. He has a heart of gold and a gentle soul. We all love him."

Mumbles' adoption fee is $500. Approved adopters can see him at his foster home in central MA.

A Phenomenal Natural Athlete!

C07-2394-10. CANTER-OWNED GELDING,
Chestnut, 16 1/2 hands, 5 years old

"Malibu Eclipse" decided on his very first day of post-racing life that he was destined to be a sporthorse: he sailed over a 4-foot fence at his foster home, without turning a hair or breaking a sweat! Needless to say, all bystanders were duly impressed...and that's the effect Malibu tends to have on everyone.

Exceptionally well bred and well handled throughout his racing career, Malibu has George Clooney charisma AND the looks to match! He was donated to us when his owner decided she'd rather see him find a good home as a show prospect than push him on the tougher Florida circuit over the winter. He is sound on a slight high bow in his left front tendon -
while the tendon can sometimes bug him, he should be able to do fabulously as a dressage or lower-level hunter/jumper!

Malibu is going to be a VERY, very fancy horse with retraining and polishing. He is bold and powerful, and is not suitable for a beginner or less confident rider/handler - but he will be magic in the right hands.

Malibu's adoption fee is $500. Approved adopters can see him at his foster home in central MA.

A Tall, Striking Redhead...Just a Baby!

C07-2347-09. CANTER-OWNED FILLY, Chestnut, 16 1/2 hands (already!), 3 years old

"Ginger Snap" came to CANTER NE as a complete "blank slate." Not only had this long-legged, winsome beauty never raced, or had any race training... she had not been registered...and didn't even have a name! She came from a local racing breeding farm that was looking to downsize, and had been planning to send this girl and her stablemate, Chief (since adopted - she misses him a lot!) to auction before CANTER agreed to help.

Her cinnamon coloring and joyful, playful personality led her foster home to start calling this baby "Ginger Snap." Ginger is a wonderfully kind girl, already an impressive size. She is, without fail, polite, sweet-natured, and a complete lady to handle.

Unfortunately, we have learned - after a would-be adopter had her X-rayed - that poor Ginger Snap has previously undetected chips in one hock. She is not at all lame, and no one is sure how this could have happened, given her young age and lack of athletic training/competition; but the vet who X-rayed her feels that she will not be a riding candidate unless the chips are surgically removed. (She has a good chance of coming sound for flatwork disciplines - though not jumping/eventing - with surgery). For this reason, we have reduced her adoption fee to $1...provided the adopter signs an agreement that they will have the surgery performed, or intends to adopt her strictly as a companion horse. Ginger's would-be adopter was kind enough to donate the X-rays and records from her pre-purchase exam to us, and we are happy to share them with approved candidates. Please don't hesitate to contact us with questions.

Ginger Snap's special adoption fee is $1 to an approved adopter who will agree to have her hock chips surgically removed. Approved adopters can see her at her foster home in central MA.
