We are an all volunteer organization with no salaries paid.

CANTER Southern Illinois is dedicated to providing retiring racehorses with opportunities for new careers after the finish line, and every dollar goes towards this goal.

Please note that CANTER Southern Illinois is not yet approved by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization and your donations are not yet tax deductible. Our application is pending.

Become a CANTER Volunteer!

CANTER Southern Illinois could not possibly survive without the dedication and perseverance of our hardworking volunteers. Thanks to them, we are able to continue on and help owners and trailers place their Thoroughbreds in loving homes. We are Always looking for volunteers to visit the track, help with buyers and network in the Horse community.

So that we can make sure to have a uniform set of info on all those wishing to volunteer, pleasee send an email detailing (completely) the following:

  • Full name
  • Age (*Minors are not permitted to volunteer for track visits or direct work with the horses due to liability issues.)
  • Address (we'll eventually be sending out periodic newsletters)
  • Telephone (both day and evening so that we can call if we want to discuss volunteering opportunities)

Details on:

1. What activities you can/would like to volunteer for.
2. The number of hours you can commit.
3. When you are available, i.e. day, evening, weekend, weekday, etc.
4. Any computer, marketing, PR, fundraising or other skills you may have that would be a support to the organization.

A "self-assessment" your level of experience as a horseperson (horse lover but very inexperienced, novice, expert, etc.) This will help us put together the most appropriate volunteering "teams" in cases where we might be looking to have folks dealing directly with the horses; we wouldn't want to put together very inexperienced people without support.

*Please Note: Due to the volume of email we receive, and the limited volunteer resources, it may take a bit of time to respond. We ask that you be patient but persistent.
