CANTER provides retiring thoroughbred racehorses with opportunities for new careers.
The generosity and support of Michigan equine veterinarians and Michigan State University are outstanding examples of professionals who are dedicated to their mission and have compassion for Thoroughbred ex-racehorses who need their help. They offer CANTER-owned ex-racehorses every opportunity to begin the next phase of their lives healthy and pain-free.

Michigan State University - East Lansing, Michigan
MSU College of Veterinary Medicine, Equine Services and the Equine Rehabilitation Fund
Since 1999, Michigan State University and CANTER Michigan have made a joint commitment to help injured Thoroughbreds by providing life-saving surgeries and veterinary care that give them the opportunity to find new homes and careers.
Injured ex-racehorses donated to CANTER Michigan by racing owners and trainers receive surgeries at MSU to arthroscopically remove bone fragments from joints and leg fractures. MSU also provides other forms of surgery and procedures on CANTER-owned Thoroughbred ex-racehorses, including clinical exams, evaluations, and diagnostic tests.
In addition to restoring injured horses to soundness, the MSU/CANTER Michigan partnership provides MSU veterinary students with advanced educational opportunities as they assist with all aspects of surgery: preparation, anesthesia, arthroscopic surgery, and post-surgery care. This program helps the MSU equine veterinary program to be one of the best in the country.
Following months of rehabilitation with a CANTER rehab specialist, Thoroughbreds treated at MSU can begin retraining, proving that racing is just the first of many phases in their careers.
The first post-racetrack home for CANTER Michigan Thoroughbreds is one of our Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) accredited boarding facilities. The horses receive any necessary rehabilitation, veterinary, and/or farrier care as well as downtime to adjust to farm life and living in a herd.
