Horse Listing Information

Incorrect Listings

If you find that information on our website is incorrect or that a horse has already been sold, please notify the CANTER Local Affiliate the horse is listed under. You can find the list of our Local Affiliates at canterusa.org/affiliates.

No Shows

No-shows put the CANTER program at risk!

Make sure you have an appointment to view a horse, and double check the availability before your track visit. If you cannot make your appointment for any reason, please call the trainer. It only takes a minute, and helps the horses by extending courtesy to trainers/owners willing to work with CANTER.

Keep in mind you are visiting a workplace. Time is taken out of their work day to show you horses, so honesty is paramount. Be up front with trainers/owners about your interest in their horse.

Guarantees

CANTER does NOT guarantee the condition of any horse at any time. As with ANY equine acquisition, we urge you to have a veterinarian perform an exam before you buy a horse. Exercise caution when considering any horse listed. The representations and descriptions in the Horse Listing section are provided to us by the owner, trainer, or breeder listing the horse. We have NOT verified all claims therein. If you are unfamiliar a training and handling of a thoroughbred off the track we urge you to visit the FAQs section of our website.

Advice

Any horse training / rehabilitation information has been provided as a reference for those who have chosen to retrain an ex-racehorse. The information furnished here should not be viewed as personal and direct advice for your specific situation. As with all cases, you should consult a horse professional (trainer, veterinarian, farrier) who can provide a proper recommendation on how to deal with your specific situation. We always recommend that you seek professional advice.

Through our different programs and our website, CANTER and its volunteers provide retiring Thoroughbred racehorses with opportunities for new careers by helping to place, rehabilitate, and retrain these amazing athletes.

Using CANTER Online Horse Listings

Horse Listings

All CANTER horses available for purchase or adoption can be seen on the main horses list at CANTERUSA.org/horses.

From this view, you can see a small amount of preliminary information about the horse including name, listing type (whether a horse is owned by CANTER or by a separate trainer), a short description, purchase price and gender.

You can sort the horses that appear in the list by clicking on the blue options in the ‘order by’ list that appears above the horse list.

To view a horse, simply click on the image or horse’s name, which appears right below the image.

Searching For Horses

To search, click the ‘Search’ button in the top navigation of the horses site (canterusa.org/horses).

In the window that appears, fill out or select the appropriate fields in the search box that appears to the right of all horse listings and press the ‘search’ button. For more options to search by, click the ‘advanced search’ link and more options will be revealed.

The search works on with a Boolean ‘and’ search functionality, simply meaning that all completed/selected fields work together to sort horses. As an example, selecting the Listing Type of ‘CANTER Owned’ and the Local Affiliate of ‘California’ will only show results that match both terms – CANTER Owned in California.

Viewing A Horse

Viewing and individual horse’s page gives you much more information about that horse. The horse’s specific information such as description, purchase price, height, age, etc. all appears down the page below the images.

Hovering over a thumbnail shows that image in the larger frame and clicking on the larger frame or the thumbnail loads the image to a larger size in a lightbox.

If the horse is in any videos, they may appear as links or as embedded videos. By clicking on these you can view the horses videos.

If the horse’s racing career information is known, it will appear under the ‘Race Career’ tab.
