Some may have noticed a few new horse faces on the “horses for adoption” lists for CANTER Michigan—OTTBs imported from Hong Kong. Here’s a little background: The Hong Kong Jockey Club contacted CANTER USA about the possibility of sending some of their ready-for-a-new-career horses to the United States. Why? Hong Kong has a lot of thoroughbreds, and limited space to house them once their careers on the track come to an end. They were searching for ways to give Hong Kong’s OTTBs a new chance. After lengthy consideration and discussion among the CANTER Board, it was decided to give this a try.
According to CANTER Executive Director Nancy Koch, “CANTER’s mission is to rehab, retrain and rehome thoroughbreds. This is the right thing to do.”
The good news? The Hong Kong Jockey Club is making a donation for each horse taken in by CANTER, as well as paying all shipping fees. More good news? The Hong Kong project has not taken away from CANTER’s mission for U.S. horses. Any retiring thoroughbred in the U.S. that can be transitioned will not be turned away from CANTER.
